Agostino Tassi was the private tutor of Artemisia appointed by his father when he worked for the vaults of Casino della Rose.  However, she was raped by him.  The rape also involved another man named Cosimo Quorlis. The sexual relationship between Agostino Tassi and Artemisia continued because he promised her for marriage. Since his father knew that he would not marry his daughter, he put charged against Tassi.  The father of Artemisia pressed charges because Artemisia was still virgin before she was raped by him. To prove it, Artemisia had to endure the torture of gynecological examination using thumbscrews.
